The season of appetite has come.

I will write a series of blogs about food over the following few issues.

The first blog will be about nutrients and foods necessary during pregnancy.

Pregnancy requires special nutritional care to maintain the health of the mother and fetus.

First, folic acid is essential in early pregnancy to prevent abnormalities in the neural tube, through which spinal nerves pass.

Folic acid is rich in green and yellow vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, and avocados.

Calcium is essential for developing fetal bones and teeth and can be obtained from small fish and tofu made from soybeans.

Vitamin D is also needed to aid calcium absorption and is abundant in fish and egg yolks.

In the clinic, we measured the concentrations of vitamin D and folic acid in the blood.

We have found that many of our patient’s blood levels of vitamin D and folic acid do not reach the standard levels.

We also introduce medical supplements for those pregnant women.

Iron is also essential; the demand for iron increases during pregnancy because of the increased blood volume.

Iron is abundant in red meat, liver, and spinach.
