English blog (5) : Vitamin C Benefits for the Skin (2)|まつみレディースクリニック|港区・田町・浜松町の産科・婦人科・不妊|女医在籍

The topic of Matsumi Ladies Clinic Mita English blog in November is about the benefits of vitamin C for the skin.

In the first and the second part, I will create this theme suitable for easy reading.

In the first part, I created an article focusing on the benefits of vitamin C for the skin.

This second part article is focused on the intake of vitamin C.

How much should you take vitamin C?

The recommended daily intake of vitamin C is about 100mg.

Vitamin C is water-soluble, which means that it is easily absorbed and gone out from your body.

So, you need to take vitamin C regularly to keep the skin soft, supple and blemish-free.

Which foods do you know that are rich in vitamin C?

Not only citrus fruits but also a variety of berries (e.g. black currents, strawberries) and green leafy vegetables (e.g. kale and spinach) are an excellent source of vitamin C for the skin.

Besides, kiwi, papaya, broccoli, tomato, and bell peppers include plenty of this nutrient.

There is a terrible story regarding vitamin C.

Many centuries ago, sailors suffered from Scurvy due to a lack of fresh food.

The symptoms of this disease were:
swollen and bleeding gums,
loose teeth,
hemorrhage under the skin,
and slowed healing of wounds.

It tells how much vitamin C is vital for humans.

The word “Vitamin” is derived from the word “Vita”, which means life in Latin.

Popeye, the chief character of a famous American comic is a sailor, who gets power from fresh spinach.

To take vitamin C, eating or drinking fresh fruits and vegetables is the best.

However, some vegetables are inedible or not tasty without cooking.

For preparing a meal, keep in mind that vitamin C tends to escape while cooking.

For example, when boiling broccoli, the vitamin C leaks into the water.

The best way is to use it for soup or sauce.

Try to limit cooking time and steam or microwave as much as possible, so that you can benefit much more from vitamin C.
