English blog (65) : Winter (2)

The topic of Matsumi Ladies Clinic Mita English blog in January is about winter.

In the second part, I create an article about changes in winter.

Winter starts on the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, which is around the 21st of December.

Do you like shorter daylight, cold temperatures, and snow?

I like this season because of coldness, which gives some fresh feelings.

However, some summer persons struggle to survive in such harsh weather.

Not only human beings, animals and plants also face the same challenge as ours.

Some creatures are capable of adapting to the changing climate, but some are not.

As you know, birds fly to warmer places before winter arrives.

Most animals eat lots of food to get extra fat for the winter season like us.

Do you know that mice and beavers stock up food in their home?

Also, some animals’ fur grows and get thicker, even changing its color.

Arctic foxes’ fur turns from a dark color into white to blend in with the snow.

Many people enjoy being a couch potato in winter—just relaxing on the sofa and watching TV with a cup of tea.

Typically, animals like bears hibernate, while some go out only on warm winter days.

How about plants?

Unlike birds, they can not migrate or grow their fur.

So, freezing is the worst foe for their survival.

Plants are created with unique functions.

Deciduous plants, such as maple trees, drop leaves to reduce water consumption and become dormant like bears.

Conifers have needle-like leaves that stay in winter, as the waxy-coating of the leaves minimizes water loss.

Some evergreens are unique.

They automatically seal off the frozen cell so not as to affect the other cells.

Every living thing needs to adjust to survive in a particular environment.

Winter is the most challenging season.

What about tasting a cup of tea with a loose pile of tree leaves?

It will bring plenty of comfort.
